Emotional Support Therapy – Dogs Minds Matter

About the Therapy Sessions

At Sir Thomas Boughey Academy we have organised a fantastic opportunity for a number of our students to take part in dog therapy sessions. Groups of students will be able to work with the dogs to develop their skills, including their ability to understand their own emotions. The dogs help to ‘establish an emotional link with students who are autistic, have PTSD, attachment disorders or have suffered with abuse or neglect, who would usually find it very challenging to engage with another person’.
Dog therapy sessions have been organised to help and encourage social interactions. The aim is to get students to understand their own emotions and ability to overcome barriers. Dogs are effective in helping with emotions within the school environment and at home. They also promote healthy functioning and positive mental health. Adam works with two dogs. Angus, a rescue German Wirehaired Pointer who is 3 years old and Chester who is a 12-month-old Springer Spaniel who is currently in training. We are delighted to provide this opportunity for our students in school.
